This playbook turns that promise into a controlled sequence: capture the project brief, verify material and hardware groups, work through three consequential choices, complete six observable phases, and close against a named finish line. It is designed to keep related resources together without pretending that a generic page knows the dimensions, loads, products, tools, site conditions, or requirements of a real job.

Write the project brief before choosing a path
A useful brief records both the value and its source. Write the room, product, drawing, measurement method, responsible person, date, and revision where those details control the result. Entries remain in this browser when storage is available; they are not uploaded by this page.
Do not use a remembered dimension as a released input. If the source is missing, mark the field open and keep dependent purchasing, cutting, drilling, finishing, or installation on hold.
Material and hardware map
Verify purchasable groups, not just familiar names
The groups below are specification prompts, not a purchase order. Derive quantities from the released parts list, then reconcile actual stock size, measured thickness, face and grade requirements, grain direction, trim, kerf, defects, test pieces, hardware model, finish system, and supplier packaging before ordering.

A substitution is a design change when it alters thickness, stiffness, machining, fastener capacity, edge treatment, finish compatibility, reveal, movement, load, or installation sequence. Record the substitution, identify every dependent part or phase, and issue a new revision instead of quietly carrying an old quantity forward.
Choose, then reveal
Three decisions that change the project downstream
Select the condition that matches the verified brief before opening the consequence. This small pause prevents a familiar preference from masquerading as a project fact. The reveal explains what must be carried into dimensions, material, sequence, and evidence; it does not approve the choice.
Does soil contact the wooden shell?
Wet growing medium holds moisture and fertilizer against joints and hidden panel edges.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathUse a removable planting insert or drained liner separated from the shell: Water and soil can be serviced without making wood the permanent container. Separate horticultural containment from the visible furniture shell.
Conditional — verifyUse naturally durable boards with open drainage and replaceable interior parts: This accepts a finite service life when every wet surface can dry and be inspected. Plan replacement before fasteners and finish hide decay.
Stop and resolveFill a sealed plywood box directly with soil: Persistent moisture attacks edges, joints, and fasteners from inside. Do not make vulnerable panel core the planting liner.
Where does excess water go?
Drainage that exists only as holes may still stain surfaces, rot feet, or affect spaces below.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathRoute water through a visible serviceable outlet to an approved destination: Flow can be tested, cleaned, and kept away from structural edges. Design the downstream water path, not just the exit hole.
Conditional — verifyUse a removable tray with defined overflow and inspection: This can suit small planters when capacity and emptying routine are realistic. Do not let the tray become a hidden reservoir.
Stop and resolveLet water find deck gaps: Runoff and staining consequences remain unknown. Stop before directing water onto shared or protected construction.
Should the planter have casters?
Wet soil makes a compact planter far heavier and more top-heavy than its empty shell.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathUse a separately rated low rolling platform based on saturated load: Wheelbase, capacity, restraint, and replacement stay independent of the planter shell. Calculate movement from the wet condition.
Conditional — verifyUse fixed feet and move only when empty: This is simpler when seasonal handling can follow a documented emptying plan. Do not add decorative handles that imply loaded lifting.
Stop and resolveAdd small furniture casters after planting: Capacity, water exposure, and tipping behavior are unverified. Mobility is a loaded structural system.
After each reveal, record the verified condition in the brief and update every dependent dimension, material row, phase, and release check before continuing.

Assemble

Build a square shell and prove support and drainage without soil hiding the work.

Install

Place and level the planter so feet, drainage, access, and wind behavior match the surveyed location.

- Level without blocking the drain.
- Confirm clearance from walls, railings, and service paths.

Closeout
Outcome
Load soil in stages, retest drainage, and record seasonal inspection and repair points.
Work sequence
- Add liner, medium, and irrigation progressively.
- Run a full watering test.
- Record wet-load limit, outlet cleaning, finish, and foot inspection.

Do not close while the shell bulges, water backs up, or supporting feet settle.
Adapt without losing control
Useful variations and what they force you to revisit
A variation is not a cosmetic label. It can change the finished envelope, part set, sheet grouping, joinery, hardware, load, stability, transport, finish, installation, or removal path. Choose it early enough to update the authoritative project sources.
Slatted shell with nursery pots
Use when: Use when standard removable containers provide the required root volume and can be lifted safely when serviced.
Carry through: The shell stays ventilated and soil-free, while pot support, visual gaps, irrigation capture, and replacement sizes drive the frame.
Long herb trough
Use when: Use when shallow-root crops, irrigation flow, and one approved drain destination support a narrow continuous bed.
Carry through: A serviceable drain manifold and intermediate wet-load supports prevent one blocked outlet or long side from controlling failure.
Separately rolling planter
Use when: Use only when a low platform is rated for the complete saturated mass and the surface route is level and unobstructed.
Carry through: Mobility remains replaceable beneath the shell, but wheelbase, brakes, steering, runoff, and no-passenger rules need closeout.
Catch rework while it is still a decision
Project risks, early signals, and hold actions
Use these risks as observation prompts rather than predictions. When a signal appears, protect the current condition, keep affected work visible, identify the smallest upstream cause, and repeat every dependent calculation, sample, fit, or inspection under the corrected revision.
Dry-weight design
Early signal: Feet, side panels, handles, or casters deflect as soil is watered toward saturation.
Response: Stop filling or moving, unload safely, and redesign from the declared saturated medium, water, shell, and plant mass.
Uncontrolled runoff
Early signal: Water reaches a wall, neighbor, deck edge, staining surface, or area outside the approved drain destination.
Response: Stop irrigation, contain the discharge, and reroute through a visible serviceable outlet before reloading the planter.
Wet liner contact
Early signal: Moisture remains trapped between liner and unsealed shell edge after the drainage test.
Response: Remove the liner, dry and repair the edge, then add separation and ventilation before soil installation.
Hardware-material reaction
Early signal: Fasteners or wood develop streaking, corrosion, loosening, or discoloration at wet joints.
Response: Quarantine the connection and replace it with a compatible documented material after inspecting surrounding wood.
Never solve a mismatch by trimming or forcing the downstream part without recording what changed. A local adjustment can hide a wrong datum, wrong product, wrong material thickness, unsafe clearance, blocked assembly sequence, or installation conflict that will reappear later.

Close the project against observable results
The planter behaves as a water-managed growing container and a repairable outdoor shell, with saturated load and discharge visible rather than hidden.
- The filled and fully watered planter shows no persistent side bow, foot settlement, joint opening, or support movement.
- Test water reaches only the documented outlet or removable tray and no moisture remains against vulnerable shell edges.
- The planting insert, liner, tray, or outlet can be removed and cleaned without dismantling structural sides.
- Feet, fasteners, finish edges, and the downstream surface remain inspectable after the final irrigation test.
Closeout should leave a usable trail for repair, repeat work, disassembly, warranty questions, and future changes. Save the released drawing or sketch, final parts and material records, product identities, approved exceptions, field changes, finish information, photographs where appropriate, and the final project-playbook CSV together.

Follow current manufacturer instructions and use appropriate training, guarding, support, dust or fume control, ventilation, PPE, lifting methods, cure time, and disposal practices. Do not use this page as permission to operate unfamiliar equipment, defeat a safety system, exceed a tool or product rating, improvise a structural connection, or conceal work that has not passed the required inspection.
Structural, stair, guard, anchoring, seismic, electrical, plumbing, gas, fire, accessibility, and building-code decisions require the appropriate qualified professional or authority. Hardware clearances, fastener schedules, adhesive preparation, coating compatibility, load ratings, and installation methods come from the exact current product and project documentation. Verify them after any substitution.
Dimensions must name their datum, unit, finished or unfinished state, and measurement source. Check real openings at multiple locations; confirm square, level, plumb, flatness, obstructions, access, transport, assembly, service, and removal paths. Build a first article, sample, mockup, or dry fit when one failure could repeat across a batch or become expensive after finishing or installation.
