This playbook turns that promise into a controlled sequence: capture the project brief, verify material and hardware groups, work through three consequential choices, complete six observable phases, and close against a named finish line. It is designed to keep related resources together without pretending that a generic page knows the dimensions, loads, products, tools, site conditions, or requirements of a real job.
This is a planning playbook, not a dimensioned construction drawing, engineering review, code approval, machine instruction, or manufacturer authorization. Use it to organize questions and evidence. Write the project brief before choosing a path
A useful brief records both the value and its source. Write the room, product, drawing, measurement method, responsible person, date, and revision where those details control the result. Entries remain in this browser when storage is available; they are not uploaded by this page.
Do not use a remembered dimension as a released input. If the source is missing, mark the field open and keep dependent purchasing, cutting, drilling, finishing, or installation on hold.
Material and hardware map
Verify purchasable groups, not just familiar names
The groups below are specification prompts, not a purchase order. Derive quantities from the released parts list, then reconcile actual stock size, measured thickness, face and grade requirements, grain direction, trim, kerf, defects, test pieces, hardware model, finish system, and supplier packaging before ordering.

A substitution is a design change when it alters thickness, stiffness, machining, fastener capacity, edge treatment, finish compatibility, reveal, movement, load, or installation sequence. Record the substitution, identify every dependent part or phase, and issue a new revision instead of quietly carrying an old quantity forward.
Choose, then reveal
Three decisions that change the project downstream
Select the condition that matches the verified brief before opening the consequence. This small pause prevents a familiar preference from masquerading as a project fact. The reveal explains what must be carried into dimensions, material, sequence, and evidence; it does not approve the choice.
How wide should the bed be?
A generous planting area fails when the center requires stepping into and compacting the soil.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathSet width from tested reach on every accessible side: The gardener reaches the center while paths remain outside the soil. Mock up reach at the final bed height, not on a low table.
Conditional — verifyUse a wider bed with a deliberate central access path: This can work when the path does not interrupt drainage or root zones. Count the access path in soil volume and structure.
Stop and resolveUse four feet wide against a wall: The rear half may be inaccessible for planting and harvest. One-sided beds must be sized from one-sided reach.
What resists wet-soil pressure?
Side force increases with soil depth, water, span, and loss of connection stiffness over time.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathUse corners and intermediate braces sized for the declared height and span: Long sides have a visible path into replaceable structural members. Treat wet soil as a sustained lateral load.
Conditional — verifyReduce bed height or side-bay length: Smaller loaded panels can simplify bracing while preserving useful root volume. Recalculate soil and crop program after resizing.
Stop and resolveAdd soil first and brace if the boards bow: Movement damages joints and makes a loaded repair difficult. Release structure before the irreversible bulk fill.
Should the bottom be lined?
A blanket liner can block drainage, trap roots, or create a perched water layer.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathKeep an open draining base and use only purpose-specific permeable barriers: Water and roots follow a declared site-appropriate boundary. Choose mesh or fabric for a named problem, not as a default layer.
Conditional — verifyUse a raised contained floor only for a designed accessible planter: This can work when the floor and drainage carry the full saturated load. Treat it as a structural planter, not a ground bed.
Stop and resolveInstall an impermeable sheet without an engineered outlet: Water can collect unseen and overload or drown the bed. Do not create a basin accidentally.
After each reveal, record the verified condition in the brief and update every dependent dimension, material row, phase, and release check before continuing.

Move from verified input to documented finish
Complete phases in the order shown unless the released project plan defines a safer dependency. Each checkbox represents a reviewed phase, not merely activity. Preserve the input, observed result, owner, date, revision, and exception record that lets another person reproduce why the work moved forward.

Prepare durable side, corner, brace, and cap parts with protected ends and repeatable bay lengths.

- Pre-drill serviceable connections.
- Make a ground-contact and fastener compatibility sample.

Stop on unsuitable treated material, split ends, weak edge distance, or incompatible metal.

Assemble
Outcome
Build a square empty bed and prove every brace and irrigation route before soil conceals it.

- Square from diagonals and install mid-span braces.
- Dry-route irrigation and any purposeful barrier.

Phase 6 of 6 · 2–4 hr plus soil handling
Closeout
Outcome
Fill in controlled lifts, observe side movement and drainage, and retain maintenance access.
Work sequence
- Add soil in even lifts while monitoring sides.
- Run irrigation and drainage tests.
- Record soil volume, brace movement, seasonal checks, and repair access.

Do not close after bowing, joint movement, standing water, or path settlement.
Adapt without losing control
Useful variations and what they force you to revisit
A variation is not a cosmetic label. It can change the finished envelope, part set, sheet grouping, joinery, hardware, load, stability, transport, finish, installation, or removal path. Choose it early enough to update the authoritative project sources.
Two-sided vegetable bed
Use when: Use when paths remain available along both long sides and the tested reach meets at the center without stepping in soil.
Carry through: A wider productive zone is possible, while irrigation, trellis orientation, and mid-span braces must remain reachable from either side.
One-sided fence bed
Use when: Use only when a narrower tested reach serves the rear crop row and the fence retains required inspection access.
Carry through: Width decreases and rear fasteners, weeds, irrigation, and trellis work need a planned front-access sequence.
Accessible contained planter
Use when: Use when a qualified structural design provides a supported floor, drainage, and approach clearance above ground.
Carry through: It is no longer a simple open-bottom bed; saturated-floor load, outlet maintenance, and accessibility geometry govern the build.
Catch rework while it is still a decision
Project risks, early signals, and hold actions
Use these risks as observation prompts rather than predictions. When a signal appears, protect the current condition, keep affected work visible, identify the smallest upstream cause, and repeat every dependent calculation, sample, fit, or inspection under the corrected revision.
Unreachable center soil
Early signal: Planting, weeding, or harvest requires stepping in soil or leaning beyond the approved reach mockup.
Response: Reduce bed width or add a deliberate non-soil access path before filling and planting the affected bay.
Long-side soil bow
Early signal: Side boards move outward, brace gaps open, or corner fasteners rotate during staged fill or watering.
Response: Stop filling, unload the affected lift safely, and add or redesign corner and intermediate restraint before resuming.
Accidental water basin
Early signal: Water stands above an impermeable layer or drains only through an unverified puncture after irrigation.
Response: Remove fill as needed, restore a purposeful permeable or engineered outlet path, and retest empty before refill.
Soil arrives before release
Early signal: Bulk delivery blocks paths or pressures the team to fill before square, brace, utility, and drainage checks pass.
Response: Hold or relocate delivery and complete the empty-bed inspection; schedule pressure cannot substitute for structural evidence.
Never solve a mismatch by trimming or forcing the downstream part without recording what changed. A local adjustment can hide a wrong datum, wrong product, wrong material thickness, unsafe clearance, blocked assembly sequence, or installation conflict that will reappear later.

Closeout should leave a usable trail for repair, repeat work, disassembly, warranty questions, and future changes. Use the playbook to expose uncertainty, not to override it
Follow current manufacturer instructions and use appropriate training, guarding, support, dust or fume control, ventilation, PPE, lifting methods, cure time, and disposal practices. Do not use this page as permission to operate unfamiliar equipment, defeat a safety system, exceed a tool or product rating, improvise a structural connection, or conceal work that has not passed the required inspection.
Structural, stair, guard, anchoring, seismic, electrical, plumbing, gas, fire, accessibility, and building-code decisions require the appropriate qualified professional or authority. Hardware clearances, fastener schedules, adhesive preparation, coating compatibility, load ratings, and installation methods come from the exact current product and project documentation. Verify them after any substitution.
Dimensions must name their datum, unit, finished or unfinished state, and measurement source. Check real openings at multiple locations; confirm square, level, plumb, flatness, obstructions, access, transport, assembly, service, and removal paths. Build a first article, sample, mockup, or dry fit when one failure could repeat across a batch or become expensive after finishing or installation.

What should I do when a phase cannot be completed?
