This playbook turns that promise into a controlled sequence: capture the project brief, verify material and hardware groups, work through three consequential choices, complete six observable phases, and close against a named finish line. It is designed to keep related resources together without pretending that a generic page knows the dimensions, loads, products, tools, site conditions, or requirements of a real job.

Write the project brief before choosing a path
A useful brief records both the value and its source. Write the room, product, drawing, measurement method, responsible person, date, and revision where those details control the result. Entries remain in this browser when storage is available; they are not uploaded by this page.
Do not use a remembered dimension as a released input. If the source is missing, mark the field open and keep dependent purchasing, cutting, drilling, finishing, or installation on hold.
Material and hardware map
Verify purchasable groups, not just familiar names
The groups below are specification prompts, not a purchase order. Derive quantities from the released parts list, then reconcile actual stock size, measured thickness, face and grade requirements, grain direction, trim, kerf, defects, test pieces, hardware model, finish system, and supplier packaging before ordering.

A substitution is a design change when it alters thickness, stiffness, machining, fastener capacity, edge treatment, finish compatibility, reveal, movement, load, or installation sequence. Record the substitution, identify every dependent part or phase, and issue a new revision instead of quietly carrying an old quantity forward.
Choose, then reveal
Three decisions that change the project downstream
Select the condition that matches the verified brief before opening the consequence. This small pause prevents a familiar preference from masquerading as a project fact. The reveal explains what must be carried into dimensions, material, sequence, and evidence; it does not approve the choice.
How will the cabinet meet the uneven floor?
The cabinet must reference the room high point without forcing every box side to be custom tapered.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathLevel a separate ladder base first: Boxes stay repeatable while the base absorbs floor variation. Separate leveling from box geometry when a run includes several cabinets.
Conditional — verifyUse adjustable cabinet legs: Installation is fast, but load ratings, toe-kick clips, and access must be confirmed. Use only a complete leg system rated for the cabinet and countertop.
Stop and resolveCut each cabinet side to the floor: The box loses repeatability and errors compound across the run. Do not transfer an irregular floor directly into every production part.
When should door and drawer openings be fixed?
Overlay, slide clearance, face-frame width, and material build-up all change finished opening geometry.

Strong pathAfter exact hardware and construction are selected: The opening chain can be calculated from current product data and actual material thickness. Freeze hardware before releasing drawer and front dimensions.
Conditional — verifyUse a proven shop standard with a hardware check: A familiar standard can work if one sample installation confirms the current hardware. Treat standards as hypotheses until the first article passes.
Stop and resolveSize fronts from the rough opening at installation: Late sizing hides upstream errors and may leave no adjustment range. Do not defer the controlling reveal and clearance decisions.
How much wall variation should the cabinet absorb?
A fitted run needs deliberate fillers or scribes rather than a nominal wall-to-wall total.

Strong pathReserve measured filler and scribe widths: The boxes remain square and the visible edges can be fitted to the actual wall. Allocate room error to replaceable fit parts.
Conditional — verifyUse one oversized end panel: This can resolve a single exposed wall when the panel and reveal are designed together. Keep enough trimming room without crowding an appliance opening.
Stop and resolveBuild boxes to the largest measured width: The run can bind at the narrowest point and lose appliance clearances. Design from the smallest usable envelope, not the most generous reading.
After each reveal, record the verified condition in the brief and update every dependent dimension, material row, phase, and release check before continuing.

Level the base, place square cabinets on the datum, and fit only the planned scribe parts.

- Scribe fillers, verify services, and secure boxes without pulling them out of square.
Level run with verified appliance gaps, face alignment, and anchoring record.

Phase 6 of 6 · 45–75 min
Closeout
Outcome
Confirm function, update the as-built dimensions, and preserve adjustments for later fronts or countertop work.

- Cycle every door, drawer, and removable shelf.
- Record filler sizes and final level readings.
- Reconcile unused hardware, touchups, and punch items.

Adapt without losing control
Useful variations and what they force you to revisit
A variation is not a cosmetic label. It can change the finished envelope, part set, sheet grouping, joinery, hardware, load, stability, transport, finish, installation, or removal path. Choose it early enough to update the authoritative project sources.
Sink base service bay
Use when: Use when drain, supplies, disposer, or filter equipment occupy the center of the cabinet.
Carry through: Replace central drawers with a mapped removable floor and bounded service openings while retaining front and rear structure.
Three-drawer base
Use when: Use only after one exact slide system and the complete drawer-front reveal stack are frozen.
Carry through: The box gains three independent moving envelopes, so opening heights, stretcher locations, and first-article checks become hardware-driven.
Narrow pull-out base
Use when: Use when a slim remaining bay has clear adjacent-door and appliance movement.
Carry through: A tall moving load needs anti-racking hardware, positive travel control, and a verified fully loaded stability test.
Catch rework while it is still a decision
Project risks, early signals, and hold actions
Use these risks as observation prompts rather than predictions. When a signal appears, protect the current condition, keep affected work visible, identify the smallest upstream cause, and repeat every dependent calculation, sample, fit, or inspection under the corrected revision.
Late floor high point
Early signal: The installed cabinet tops rise above the run datum or require progressively thicker shims.
Response: Pause the run, resurvey the full floor, and reset the ladder base from the true high point before fitting cabinets.
Unfrozen drawer hardware
Early signal: Slide clearance, setback, or mounting holes do not match the released opening chain.
Response: Hold drawer production, verify the exact hardware on one opening, and revise box, drawer, and front dimensions together.
Fastener-induced rack
Early signal: Cabinet diagonals or door reveals change as wall screws are tightened.
Response: Release the fastener, correct the shim and wall-contact plane, then refasten while monitoring both diagonals.
Consumed filler allowance
Early signal: The remaining filler cannot cover wall variation while preserving the appliance or service gap.
Response: Stop scribing, reconcile the complete run-width chain, and resize fit parts or cabinet allocation before installation continues.
Never solve a mismatch by trimming or forcing the downstream part without recording what changed. A local adjustment can hide a wrong datum, wrong product, wrong material thickness, unsafe clearance, blocked assembly sequence, or installation conflict that will reappear later.

Close the project against observable results
The base cabinet is a square serviceable box fitted to an imperfect room without transferring room error into doors, drawers, or appliance openings.
- Both cabinet diagonals remain within the released tolerance after final anchoring.
- The installed top datum is level across the run while every specified appliance and service gap remains open.
- Every door, drawer, and removable shelf completes its travel with hardware adjustment still available.
- Final filler, scribe, fastener, and opening dimensions are recorded against the active cabinet revision.
Closeout should leave a usable trail for repair, repeat work, disassembly, warranty questions, and future changes. Save the released drawing or sketch, final parts and material records, product identities, approved exceptions, field changes, finish information, photographs where appropriate, and the final project-playbook CSV together.

Follow current manufacturer instructions and use appropriate training, guarding, support, dust or fume control, ventilation, PPE, lifting methods, cure time, and disposal practices. Do not use this page as permission to operate unfamiliar equipment, defeat a safety system, exceed a tool or product rating, improvise a structural connection, or conceal work that has not passed the required inspection.
Structural, stair, guard, anchoring, seismic, electrical, plumbing, gas, fire, accessibility, and building-code decisions require the appropriate qualified professional or authority. Hardware clearances, fastener schedules, adhesive preparation, coating compatibility, load ratings, and installation methods come from the exact current product and project documentation. Verify them after any substitution.
Dimensions must name their datum, unit, finished or unfinished state, and measurement source. Check real openings at multiple locations; confirm square, level, plumb, flatness, obstructions, access, transport, assembly, service, and removal paths. Build a first article, sample, mockup, or dry fit when one failure could repeat across a batch or become expensive after finishing or installation.
