EDGE BANDING / FIELD GUIDE

Edge Banding Width, Strip Length and Roll Allowances

Edging thickness controls panel dimensions. Tape width covers the panel edge. Strip length and roll length control the purchase estimate. Treat these as separate inputs.

STEP 01

Check tape width against the panel

The entered tape width must cover measured panel thickness plus the selected trimming overhang on both faces. In this model, required width = panel thickness + 2 × face overhang. An 18 mm panel with 1 mm on each face needs at least 20 mm tape under that entered rule. A 22 mm profile passes; a 19 mm profile does not. The overhang is a process input, not a universal recommendation. Choose it for the product and equipment you actually use.

STEP 02

Reserve length at both ends

Every selected edge is one strip for each physical panel. The planner reserves the larger of the saw and finished dimension along that edge, then adds the extra tape at each end. This envelope method avoids assuming which pair of edges is banded first. For three 600 mm shelf fronts with 20 mm reserved at each end, the envelope is 1.800 m and the allowance total is 3 × 640 mm = 1.920 m. With 10% additional waste, the purchase allowance becomes 2.112 m. These are arithmetic estimates, not machine feed instructions.

STEP 03

Keep profiles distinct

Profile A and profile B remain separate even if their thickness and width match. This prevents a birch-colored roll from being counted toward a white panel. Give each profile a useful name including color, finish or product reference. Edge selection uses A, B or None on each side, and quantity multiplies the number of strips. Different substrates can share a tape profile when that is your approved specification, while their sheet stock still remains in separate material and thickness groups.

STEP 04

Understand the minimum roll count

Divide the purchase allowance by the entered roll length and round up to obtain a length-based lower bound. It is not a strip-packing solution. For example, three 6 m strips total 18 m, so two 10 m rolls are a lower bound by length. Because two 6 m strips cannot share a 10 m roll, the actual requirement is three rolls if strips must be continuous. The planner rejects any single strip longer than one roll, but it does not solve the distribution of every strip across rolls. Review that allocation before placing an order.

STEP 05

Use manufacturer information for the chosen product

Product width and thickness can have different tolerances. Check the selected product specification rather than treating a nominal number as an exact measured value. CT Edge Band explains trimming overhang in its width-selection guidance; REHAU publishes separate dimensional tolerances in its technical data. Those sources describe products and processing context. The planner’s percentage waste, pre-milling and end allowance remain your own project inputs, and no cited document establishes those sample defaults as suitable for every workshop.

STEP 06

Keep an auditable purchase record

Download the edging CSV to retain strip count, envelope total, end allowance total, extra waste, purchase length and the minimum rolls by length for each profile. Confirm available roll sizes, continuous strip needs, matching batch and product reference before buying. After a test piece, correct the profile if the effective addition differs. Changing tape thickness changes the saw blanks; changing tape width or roll length changes the supply check without changing the modeled finished rectangle.
