This playbook turns that promise into a controlled sequence: capture the project brief, verify material and hardware groups, work through three consequential choices, complete six observable phases, and close against a named finish line. It is designed to keep related resources together without pretending that a generic page knows the dimensions, loads, products, tools, site conditions, or requirements of a real job.
This is a planning playbook, not a dimensioned construction drawing, engineering review, code approval, machine instruction, or manufacturer authorization. Use it to organize questions and evidence. The released design, current product data, qualified review, field measurements, test pieces, and applicable requirements remain authoritative.

Write the project brief before choosing a path
A useful brief records both the value and its source. Write the room, product, drawing, measurement method, responsible person, date, and revision where those details control the result. Entries remain in this browser when storage is available; they are not uploaded by this page.
Do not use a remembered dimension as a released input. If the source is missing, mark the field open and keep dependent purchasing, cutting, drilling, finishing, or installation on hold.
Material and hardware map
Verify purchasable groups, not just familiar names
The groups below are specification prompts, not a purchase order. Derive quantities from the released parts list, then reconcile actual stock size, measured thickness, face and grade requirements, grain direction, trim, kerf, defects, test pieces, hardware model, finish system, and supplier packaging before ordering.

A substitution is a design change when it alters thickness, stiffness, machining, fastener capacity, edge treatment, finish compatibility, reveal, movement, load, or installation sequence. Record the substitution, identify every dependent part or phase, and issue a new revision instead of quietly carrying an old quantity forward.
Choose, then reveal
Three decisions that change the project downstream
Select the condition that matches the verified brief before opening the consequence. This small pause prevents a familiar preference from masquerading as a project fact. The reveal explains what must be carried into dimensions, material, sequence, and evidence; it does not approve the choice.
How will the top stay flat?
A wide visual slab can telegraph panel bow, unbalanced finish, or a twisted base.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathUse flat stock, balanced construction, and slotted or compatible attachment: Top and base can remain aligned without forcing one to correct the other. Prove flatness before and after the full finish schedule.
Conditional — verifyLaminate two plywood layers on a verified flat caul: This creates thickness and stiffness when pressure is even and edges remain aligned. Dry-clamp the full stack and plan squeeze-out before glue.
Stop and resolvePull a bowed top flat with base screws: The fasteners store stress and may distort or fail later. Correct the panel or construction instead of using hardware as a clamp forever.
What makes the base resist racking?
Four legs connected only to a top can loosen when the table is pushed sideways.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathUse aprons, stretchers, or a rigid panel base with tested joints: Lateral loads travel through deliberate triangulation or moment-resistant connections. Identify the member that resists force in each direction.
Conditional — verifyUse wide leg plates with rated hardware: This can suit a light table if the mounting area and fasteners are proven. Test repeated side loading before finishing.
Stop and resolveRely on glue at four small end-grain contacts: The joint offers little long-term resistance to leverage. Do not confuse initial stiffness with durable racking strength.
When should the final edge profile be chosen?
Rounded corners, veneer thickness, banding, and the finish sample all change how the table feels and wears.
Carry the choice into the released plan
Strong pathTest the complete edge and finish on a full-thickness offcut: Touch, color, impact behavior, and veneer exposure are visible before the top is committed. Make the sample with the same tool sequence as the table.
Conditional — verifyUse a replaceable solid-wood edge: This can improve durability when movement and miter or butt joints are detailed. Match grain, moisture, and attachment to the panel construction.
Stop and resolveRound through thin veneer after assembly: The substrate may appear at the most visible contact edge. Know the face and edge build-up before routing.
After each reveal, record the verified condition in the brief and update every dependent dimension, material row, phase, and release check before continuing.

Move from verified input to documented finish
Complete phases in the order shown unless the released project plan defines a safer dependency. Each checkbox represents a reviewed phase, not merely activity. Preserve the input, observed result, owner, date, revision, and exception record that lets another person reproduce why the work moved forward.

Measure

- Center and attach the top with the planned allowance.

Install

Adapt without losing control
Useful variations and what they force you to revisit
A variation is not a cosmetic label. It can change the finished envelope, part set, sheet grouping, joinery, hardware, load, stability, transport, finish, installation, or removal path. Choose it early enough to update the authoritative project sources.
Plywood waterfall profile
Use when: Use when matched outside faces and a continuous top-to-side visual line matter more than removable legs.
Carry through: Miter or fold geometry, veneer sequence, clamp access, and edge impact become the defining build controls.
Open-shelf base
Use when: Use when books or trays need a lower plane and the center support fits knee and vacuum clearances.
Carry through: The shelf and divider can resist racking, but they change leg space, visual mass, and finish access.
Knock-down base
Use when: Use when the table must move through a constrained route or be flat-packed without weakening repeated assembly points.
Carry through: Rated inserts, bolt access, anti-rotation details, and an owner assembly sequence replace permanent glued joints.
Catch rework while it is still a decision
Project risks, early signals, and hold actions
Use these risks as observation prompts rather than predictions. When a signal appears, protect the current condition, keep affected work visible, identify the smallest upstream cause, and repeat every dependent calculation, sample, fit, or inspection under the corrected revision.
Untested room proportion
Early signal: The top blocks the walking path, sits beyond comfortable reach, or conflicts with reclining furniture.
Response: Return to a full-size floor and height mockup and revise the top before cutting or laminating finish material.
Decorative but weak base
Early signal: The table sways laterally or a joint line opens when the top edge is pushed.
Response: Unload the table and add a deliberate apron, stretcher, panel, or redesigned joint along the observed force direction.
Veneer breakthrough
Early signal: Routing or sanding exposes substrate at the rounded top edge or corner.
Response: Stop profiling, use the approved full-thickness edge sample, and change the edge build-up rather than blending through veneer.
Top pulled out of flat
Early signal: A foot lifts or the top twists after attachment or after one finish face cures.
Response: Release stressed attachment, restore balanced finishing and a flat top, then reattach without forcing top or base.
Never solve a mismatch by trimming or forcing the downstream part without recording what changed. A local adjustment can hide a wrong datum, wrong product, wrong material thickness, unsafe clearance, blocked assembly sequence, or installation conflict that will reappear later.

Close the project against observable results
The coffee table fits its seating group, stands without stored stress, and handles everyday edge, surface, and lateral loads through observable structure.
- All feet remain in contact on the intended floor and the table does not rock after the top is attached.
- A moderate push from each long and short direction produces no opening joint or persistent rack.
- The approved edge profile shows no exposed substrate and every normal contact corner feels consistent.
- The cured finish passes the planned water-cleanup check on the matched sample and completed top.
Closeout should leave a usable trail for repair, repeat work, disassembly, warranty questions, and future changes. Save the released drawing or sketch, final parts and material records, product identities, approved exceptions, field changes, finish information, photographs where appropriate, and the final project-playbook CSV together.

Use the playbook to expose uncertainty, not to override it
Follow current manufacturer instructions and use appropriate training, guarding, support, dust or fume control, ventilation, PPE, lifting methods, cure time, and disposal practices. Do not use this page as permission to operate unfamiliar equipment, defeat a safety system, exceed a tool or product rating, improvise a structural connection, or conceal work that has not passed the required inspection.
Structural, stair, guard, anchoring, seismic, electrical, plumbing, gas, fire, accessibility, and building-code decisions require the appropriate qualified professional or authority. Hardware clearances, fastener schedules, adhesive preparation, coating compatibility, load ratings, and installation methods come from the exact current product and project documentation. Verify them after any substitution.
Dimensions must name their datum, unit, finished or unfinished state, and measurement source. Check real openings at multiple locations; confirm square, level, plumb, flatness, obstructions, access, transport, assembly, service, and removal paths. Build a first article, sample, mockup, or dry fit when one failure could repeat across a batch or become expensive after finishing or installation.
