What is Countersink?

A countersink is a conical recess that lets the head of a flat-head screw sit flush with or slightly below the material surface. The term can describe the recess, the cutter that makes it, or the operation itself.

Why Countersink matters

A correctly sized countersink improves surface fit and reduces splitting or raised fibers around the screw head. It must match the screw-head angle and should not be confused with a straight-sided counterbore used for plugs or different fastener heads.

How to use it in a project

Drill the pilot hole for the screw's root diameter, use a stop or test piece to set countersink depth, and verify the screw head sits as intended without removing too much face material. Adjust for hardwood, plywood face veneers, and brittle finished surfaces.
