Weight estimator
Wood Weight Calculator
Estimate board or sheet weight from actual dimensions and density. Enter inches and lb/ft³ to get pounds, kilograms, volume, and weight per piece. For plywood and MDF, use the panel maker’s density rather than the face-veneer species.
How to calculate wood weight
Weight (lb) = length (in) × width (in) × thickness (in) ÷ 1,728 × density (lb/ft³) × quantity. Divide pounds by 2.20462 for kilograms. Use finished dimensions; nominal lumber sizes can overstate volume.
Worked example: a 4 × 8 foot sheet
A 96 × 48 × 0.75 inch sheet has a volume of 2 ft³. At an assumed density of 36 lb/ft³, one sheet weighs 72 lb (about 32.66 kg); three sheets weigh 216 lb (about 97.98 kg). These are the calculator’s starting dimensions and an example density, not a universal plywood weight.
Which density should I enter?
Use a supplier value for the exact material and moisture condition, or divide a sample’s measured weight by its volume. Green lumber, dry boards, plywood cores, and MDF are different materials. A species name alone cannot tell you the exact weight of a veneered panel.
For solid lumber, review the hard and soft maple notes or the red oak moisture and weight example. For a sheet purchase, use the plywood layout calculator to check the sheet count separately.
Does this check a shelf or vehicle load limit?
No. It estimates material weight only. It does not include hardware, packaging, finishes, or a structural capacity calculation. Compare the complete load with the relevant manufacturer’s limits.
